The Sky in a Room

At the Aula Magna of the Natural History Museum there will be three initiatives presented in collaboration by the University of Milan (Department of Physics) and INAF (Astronomical Observatory of Brera and IASF) for the Researchers’ Night “Meet Me Tonight”, on September 29th and 30th, 2017.

The exhibition “Large telescopes, great science”, jointly organized by the European Observatory (ESO) and the European project “Darklight” by Prof. Luigi Guzzo, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and hosted at the Department of Physics. The exhibition will guide us into the heart of the Universe and its extraordinary zoology of shapes and colors with the eyes of the VLT (Very Large Telescope), the state-of-the-art telescope that has led to extraordinary scientific discoveries such as the giant map of the universe created and studied by the Darklight project. There will also be a look at the future, with images of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) project, the huge 39m diameter telescope being built by ESO. Saturday only, from 5pm to 7pm, the ELT program manager (ESO) Roberto Tamai will exceptionally guide you through the exhibition to
tell you everything about the telescope of the future.

logo_mmt_blu_obliquoDo you want to know more about some astronomical topics? Do you want to know what dark energy is? If there is life in the Universe? If you really can go through a black hole? How many universes exist? Enjoy the initiative “Yes, but the Universe?”. Look for a researcher (*) and ask them any questions about the cosmos and the starry sky, without embarrassment: we will be there for you!

For the children, finally, there will be the activity “Color your Universe” with Martina Tremenda (*), the terrible girl exploring the cosmos invented by INAF. With her all the little ones can be protagonists, coloring their favorite planet to take home; or drawing a flag for their favorite galaxy and rebuilding, drawing after drawing, an ELT mirror on scale.
(*) NB: the researchers and the lab with Martina Tremenda will be active from 4pm to the closing time.
